During a time where devastation is occurring, altruistic acts like philanthropy can help soften the blow. Due to the recent COVID pandemic, many global resources are scarce. Medical facilities don’t have enough supplies and many stores are experiencing food shortages. Since the global crisis began, countless charities and philanthropists have made great efforts to help the world respond and heal. Altruism is a belief coined by philosophers Toby Ord and William MacAskill during the 2000’s. It is based on giving and unselfishness.
One person who has a deep passion for philanthropy is Vinod Gupta. With tens of millions of dollars in donations, the businessman makes it a priority to help others.
An article entitled “Omaha Native Vinod Gupta Spreads The Wealth: The Continous Cycle Of Prosperity Through Targeted Philanthropy”, talks about how few entrepreneurs feed into the cyclical system of resounding success in a poignant, meaningful, insightful, and truly selfless way. He’s also understood the vast value of education and has seen the opportunities that education has allotted him firsthand.
This passion for giving has resulted in his establishments including Vinod Gupta Charitable Foundation and Gupta School of Management. The latter focuses on intellectual property law and has an endowment of $2 million. The investor/philanthropist was influenced to do this by the increased need for intellectual property lawyers and his passion for learning.
In a recent article, Vinod Gupta recalls growing up in humble beginnings. His family had no access to automobiles, electricity, or toilets. Vinod Gupta persevered through this adversity and studied at one of India’s top universities, IIT Kharagpur. Upon earning his bachelor’s certification of agricultural engineering, he pursued his master’s curriculum at the University of Nebraska.
All of his schooling combined includes three honorary doctorates, two masters, and a bachelor’s degree. Amid the COVID pandemic, Vinod Gupta rallied his former schools’ alumni and other peers to help with the global crisis. In attempt to help others find solace, Gupta has provided direct support for non-salaried workers who were dependent on jobs in nonessential work environments prior to mandatory shutdowns.
