Technology is changing so quickly that it is impossible to keep up with it. One of the biggest areas of change is digital currency. Although most people have heard of Bitcoin and Ethereum by now, the majority of the population has yet to use it. DFINITY aims to change that by making digital currencies easier to use and more accessible to everyday people. It plans to do this by decentralizing the transactions of digital currencies, making those transactions more secure and decreasing the amount of time that it takes to complete such a transaction
What Is DFINITY?
DFINITY is a business founded by Dominic Williams. In 2016, the tech entrepreneur launched it with the purpose of eliminating reliance on central server farms. He noticed that with all the power in the hands of a few, there was less development. The reliance of central server farms also put the security of digital transactions at risk. Mr. Williams foresees an open internet, so he created what he called the DFINITY computer. Today, that computing system is known as the Internet Computer.
What DFINITY Does
DFINITY is now a foundation, and its board supports the development of the open internet. It released a token, and the funds from that token have provided financial support to educators, students and independent developers to build apps, tools and platforms for a decentralized internet. DFINITY’s Internet Computer is spread across countries and includes thousands of nodes. By getting rid of the server farms, DFINITY hopes to put the control of the internet and cloud computing back where it belongs: in the hands of its users.
Mission and Future of the Internet Computer
Dominic Williams states that DFINITY’s mission is to make an open internet that anyone can access, build and improve. The secondary goals are to reduce or get rid of server farms that attract hackers and put the power of the internet in the hands of few people. The Internet Computer already has several applications, such as the verification of digital works of art and luxury goods that are sold in online marketplaces.
